Druginformer Identified Side Effects: Nightmares, Flat affect, Weight gain, Libido decreased, Alopecia

Effectiveness Rating:     Overall Rating:

Posted By Michelle on February 20, 2016 @ 5:31 pm

I experienced about a 20# weight gain over the course of the 4 years I was on a 10 mg of Paxil. About a year ago I somehow forgot to take my daily dose for 2 days and the night of the 2nd day I had such horrible nightmares I woke up screaming. Didn't make the connection until the next day at work when I became dizzy and had ringing in my ears. I suddenly realized it that it had to be from the Paxil. I took it as soon as I returned home and the next day I was fine. I also experienced a total lack of libido but I attributed that to menopause. About 6 months ago I decided to begin weaning myself off of it. I started skipping every other day and did have some vivid dreaming but once that subsided I cut the q-o-d dosage by 1/2 and stayed with that for awhile. Then went to every 3rd day for about 2 weeks and then quit altogether. Experienced night-time agitation but the days were fine. A new hairdresser asked me a few weeks ago if I had been on any kind of chemotherapy which surprised the heck out of me. She said she could see a lot of previous hair loss that was beginning to grow back! I had noticed over the last 2-3 years that I was losing more hair than normal but attributed that to my age (61). It was insidious, not acute. After reading through comments on your site I now think it was due to the Paxil. My boyfriend is now telling me that he likes the "new" me so much better because I was so even-keeled before that he was beginning to find me boring! I must say, though, that with all of the stress going on in my life at the time I began taking it, I really needed this drug. It made me feel happy again. This DID wear off after a while, likely due to not increasing the dose after a time. So I think the key is to take it to get those brain synapses in order again, but wean off of it as soon as you can.

* About FAERS: The FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) is used by FDA for activities such as looking for new safety concerns that might be related to a marketed product, evaluating a manufacturer's compliance to reporting regulations and responding to outside requests for information. Reporting of adverse events is a voluntary process, and not every report is sent to FDA and entered into FAERS. The FAERS database may contain duplicate reports, the report quality is variable, and many factors may influence reporting (e.g., media attention, length of time a drug is marketed, market share). For these reasons, FAERS case reports cannot be used to calculate incidence or estimates of risk for a particular product or compare risks between products.
